US Route 66 was the main road to take a person from Chicago to Los Angeles. It was also the first one to be completely paved. There were other Routes but this took you South which was better most times of the year. US Route 66 has many names for it as well, The Will Rogers Highway, The Mother Road or Main Street of America. When the United States decided to use number designations for Highways, some people wanted to use US 60 but there was a fight over that number so two men, Cyrus Avery (original entrepreneur) and John Page (a Highway Engineer) decided that 66 sounded like a good number and was fun to say. It was adopted and then the Bunion Derby, a foot race from Los Angeles to New York, helped to promote the road and get people out on Route 66 to watch the runners. Will Rogers even showed up for the event! The Highway 66 Association also had ads in papers for people to take US Route 66 to see the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 1932. Its decline started after President Eisenhower directed the building of Interstate Highways and US Route 66 was bypassed. Even as the Television Series Route 66 was telling stories about it. It has had a revival from Disney's Cars and as a Historic Highway.
