The Democrat's Mascot is a Donkey. This started when Andrew Jackson was running for President in 1828 his opponents called him a, "Jackass". Andrew Jackson thought it was a strong willed animal and began to use it in his posters. He won the election. In the 1870's Thomas Nast a political cartoonist decided to use the Donkey in his cartoons for the New York Herald and Harper's Weekly. He also used an Elephant in his cartoons to represent the Republicans. In the 1880's other cartoonist picked up the Donkey and Elephant for their cartoons. The Mascots were born.
