When the House of Stewart fell from grace in England so did the Cavalier King Charles Breed. It almost died out but Queen Victoria brought it back but it had changed its look at that point. An American, Roswell Eldridge went to England in 1920 to find the "old type" of Cavalier but failed so he said he would pay 25 pounds for the best male and female for each year. In 1952 they were brought to USA. They were not recognized by the AKC until 1995. They are now #18 on the AKC most popular breed list.
