The American Goldfinch is the state bird for Iowa, New Jersey and Washington. They love to be at feeders that even swing in the wind. They love Sunflower and Nyler seeds the most. When the adult male in spring or early summer is breeding he is the brightest yellow not breeding he has a dull yellow head and brown underpants. The female breeding is a dull yellow and blackish wings. They are all small birds with conical bill and small head long wings and notched tail. They stay in North America breeding in the Northern States and Canada. They will sometimes stay in the Northern and Central USA all year round. When not breeding and in winter they will go into southern states and the Pacific Coast.
